SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION

In simultaneous translation, the translator takes place in translation cabin equipped with a headphone and a microphone. He/she hears speaking of the lecturer through the headphone and translates to the target language simultaneously; the translation is heard by the audience through the microphone. A simultaneous translator can translate the material equal to 65 pages in an average working day, which is six-hour. A simultaneous translator works maximum 6 hours as 1-hour periods in a meeting or conference. Simultaneous translation is preferred for very large and especially multilingual conferences.

CONSECUTIVE TRANSLATION

Translators take place at the table with attendees and do not use any technical equipment. While the lecturer is speaking for a few minutes or sentences according to the content of the meeting, the translator takes notes. Then lecturer stops speaking, and the translator repeats the same speaking in the other language.

General Working provisions and Liabilities of Conference Translators

1. Conference translators accept the assignments for the subjects only, which they are well-informed.
2. Conference translators are subject to the professional confidentiality principle. They cannot disclose the information, the documents, etc, which he/she has obtained by his/her translator identity to third persons without consent of his/her employer. The professional secret is not limited to the term of his/her agreement with the employer. It also binds the translator after completion and abolition of the agreement.
3. UCTA members never enter into the cabin with the persons, who are not a member or membership candidate of the association or that they obey to UCTA working provisions and have professional sufficiency are not approved by UCTA.
4. The conference translator always translates whatever he/she hears. In case that he/she is constrained to make subjective or more/less translation on purpose, he/she refuse to work without resulting in any sanction with respect to him/her.
5. Conference translators can never work and cannot be constrained to work alone in the meetings, which lasts more than 1.5 hours. A two-translator team working time cannot exceed 2 x 3 hours. Translators work as 3-translator teams in the meetings, which lasts more than 6 hours. Lunch-break is at least 1 hour.
6. The duty of conference translators is to make oral translation. They cannot be constrained to make written translation.
7. The translators, who are engaged for the same work by the same employer, take the same wage.
8. With the exception of the cases that the broadcasting company belongs to the employer, the translation, which is done during the meeting, cannot be broadcasted by TV or radio without permission of the conference translator. Every type of audio-record intended for broadcasting is subject to the translator's consent and copyright fee. This fee cannot be below 50% of translator's daily wage.
9. The conference owner delivers every type of document such as notification texts, program etc to the conference translators in a feasible time before to allow them make technical and terminological preparations required. In addition, in case of sensitive subjects from the point of politics and technique or if the conference owner considers required, a briefing may be given to the translators before the conference.
10. The conference translator cannot be constrained to translate a text, which is not given to him/her previously, or a videotape or a film, which is not watched previously. In all cases, the voice must be supplied to the cabin directly for translation of this visual material.
11. The cabin and technical equipment, which will be used during the simultaneous translation, must be consistent with ISO 2603 and 4043 standards; the cabin must be constructed in a distance and position, which the translator can see easily the lecturer, the desk and the visual material, which is reflected on the curtain. In case that the conditions of the cabins and the equipment is not suitable (including TV monitor installation in cabins) if the arrangement required is not done, translators cannot be constrained to work.
12. Travel, meal and accommodation expenditures of the translator in a place apart from which he/she lives, are paid by the employer. Travel is done by airway or in case that it is not possible by a direct vehicle. Accommodation must be done in the hotel, which the conference will be held, or in case that it not possible, at least a 4-star hotel and in a single room.
13. The translator takes at least half of his/her daily wage in case that travel exceeds 4 hours at home or abroad, for each travel day, and in case that he/she works in a place apart from which he/she lives, for each day, which he/she does not work during conference breaks. Similarly, if the translator is demanded to travel within working hours (09:00-18:00) on the day before the meeting or travel conditions require doing so, at least half of daily wage is accrued.
14. All the agencies, which make agreement with the conference translators, are obliged to make the translators contact with the persons or institutions, who arrange the conference, for performing the translation at a higher quality.
15. With the exception of force major, in case that the conference holder makes a single sided abrogation one day earlier before the working day; complete cost of translation and in case of 2 and 7 days earlier before the working day 50% of it is accrued.
